Obverse description Central device consisting of a bow and crossed arrow, depicted in a primitive, crudely cast style characteristic of insurgent emergency coinage. The inscription SUD (meaning 'South', denoting the Southern insurgent forces under Morelos) appears in the lower field beneath the bow-and-arrow device. The coin's irregular flan and milled border reflect the rudimentary minting conditions of the Mexican War of Independence. The overall composition is boldly rendered in raised relief against a plain field.
