| Reverse description | Central device features a large crowned Gothic monogram of the Virgin Mary (MA cypher), surmounted by a floriated cross, with the numeral '2' to the right and the letter 'R' to the left indicating the denomination of 2 Reales. Four small rosette or quatrefoil ornaments are symmetrically placed around the monogram. The device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, VIRTVTE ET PROTECTIONE, is rendered in Latin and reads around the periphery, with the date 1700 appearing at the base of the coin. The overall composition reflects the distinctive 'María' type introduced for milled coinage of the period. |
