Obverse description Central field dominated by the quartered royal arms of Spain within a crowned shield, displaying the castles of Castile and the lions of León in alternating quarters, with the mint mark 'S' and assayer mark 'M' flanking the shield at center right. The crowned escutcheon is surmounted by a royal crown with fleurs-de-lis. The circular legend, reading CAROLVS II D G HISPA REX, is arranged around the periphery in Latin, with rosette stops separating the inscription. The coin exhibits a milled or grained edge characteristic of roller-milled production, and the design is rendered in low relief consistent with the late seventeenth-century Seville mint style.
Obverse script Latin

Reverse description Central device features a large crowned Gothic monogram of the Virgin Mary (MA cypher), surmounted by a floriated cross, with the numeral '2' to the right and the letter 'R' to the left indicating the denomination of 2 Reales. Four small rosette or quatrefoil ornaments are symmetrically placed around the monogram. The device is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, VIRTVTE ET PROTECTIONE, is rendered in Latin and reads around the periphery, with the date 1700 appearing at the base of the coin. The overall composition reflects the distinctive 'María' type introduced for milled coinage of the period.
