Beschrijving keerzijde A bold cross divides the field into four quarters, with the city monogram 'S' in the upper-left quarter and 'M' (for Santa Marta) in the upper-right quarter. The lower-left quarter contains a castle or fortification device, and the lower-right quarter depicts a sword and cannon balls, emblematic of the city's military character. The entire central design is surrounded by an irregular serrated or toothed border, characteristic of the emergency coinage issued by the royalist-held city of Santa Marta during the Colombian War of Independence.

Aanvullende informatie

Santa Marta's 1820 coinage emerged from one of the most chaotic episodes in New Granadan monetary history. The city, a royalist stronghold, was operating in near-complete isolation from both the disintegrating Spanish colonial administration and the advancing patriot forces under Bolívar. Local authorities struck emergency issues to maintain commerce when standard Crown coinage had effectively stopped arriving from peninsula mints.

KM#B5 is among the scarcer of the Santa Marta provisional types. The city fell to republican forces in 1821, ending royalist coin production entirely.
