Santa Marta's 1820 coinage emerged from one of the most chaotic episodes in New Granadan monetary history. The city, a royalist stronghold, was operating in near-complete isolation from both the disintegrating Spanish colonial administration and the advancing patriot forces under Bolívar. Local authorities struck emergency issues to maintain commerce when standard Crown coinage had effectively stopped arriving from peninsula mints.
KM#B5 is among the scarcer of the Santa Marta provisional types. The city fell to republican forces in 1821, ending royalist coin production entirely.
