| Descrizione del dritto | Central field occupied by the quartered royal arms of Castile and León, with Granada in base and a small escutcheon of Austria-Burgundy-Brabant overall, surmounted by an open royal crown. The mintmark of Segovia (an aqueduct symbol) appears to the left of the shield, with the Roman numeral value mark II to the right. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the Latin legend disposed around the periphery reading PHILIPPVS II DEI GRATIA. The flan is characteristically irregular in shape, as typical of hammered coinage of the period. |

Felipe II inherited a mint system under chronic strain from the demands of New World silver and near-constant wartime expenditure — the Army of Flanders alone consumed revenues at a rate the Castilian treasury struggled to match across his entire reign. The Segovia mint, granted water-powered hammer machinery in the 1580s, was among the first in Castile to mechanize, producing rounder, more uniform coins than the crudely cut macuquinas coming out of most peninsular and colonial facilities.
Cal#511 covers the full span of Felipe's reign, so placing a specimen precisely within that window requires examining mill characteristics and assayer marks. Segovia's assayer initial is the critical identifier here.
