Obverse description Central crowned quartered shield of Castile and León, displaying the castles of Castile and the lions of León in alternating quarters, with Granada in base, all within a beaded inner circle. The mintmark appears to the left of the shield and the denomination mark to the right. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery, partially visible due to the irregular flan typical of hammered coinage. The design is struck on an irregular planchet characteristic of Spanish macuquina (cob) coinage of the period.
