Felipe II inherited a minting system stretched thin by imperial demand, and the Burgos mint — one of Castile's oldest — was producing cobs and hammered coinage simultaneously to keep pace with silver flowing in from the Americas. The 1566 authorization that opens this type's date range formalized new assayer accountability measures following chronic weight fraud at multiple Castilian mints in the preceding decades.
Burgos pieces from this reign are notoriously irregular in flan preparation, even by macuquina standards.
