| Reverse description | Central field bears a bold floriated cross with quadrilobe terminations, dividing the field into four quarters, each containing alternating castles and lions drawn from the royal arms of Castile and León. A beaded inner border surrounds the cross design, with the partial Latin legend running along the outer periphery of the irregularly shaped flan. The die work is characteristic of the macuquina hammered technique employed at the Burgos mint during the reign of Philip II, resulting in an off-centre strike with varying flan coverage. |

| Additional information |
Felipe II inherited a minting system stretched thin by imperial demand, and the Burgos mint — one of Castile's oldest — was producing cobs and hammered coinage simultaneously to keep pace with silver flowing in from the Americas. The 1566 authorization that opens this type's date range formalized new assayer accountability measures following chronic weight fraud at multiple Castilian mints in the preceding decades.
Burgos pieces from this reign are notoriously irregular in flan preparation, even by macuquina standards.
