Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse of the host coin displays a nearly blank field, with the original pomegranate device of the Nueva Granada issue now largely effaced or worn flat, leaving only faint traces in the central field. The circular legend NUEVA GRANADA · 2R · I · F distributes around the periphery, with the denomination indicator 2R and assayer initials visible along the lower right arc, and the mint mark and additional initials appearing at the base. A milled border of uniform radial reeding frames the entire design.

Aanvullende informatie

Ecuador's countermarked issues of this type were applied to Spanish colonial cob and milled coinage circulating in the region during the chaotic independence period, when the newly asserting republic lacked the infrastructure to mint original coinage of its own. The host coin here predates Ecuadorian independence — Guayaquil declared in October 1820, Quito not until May 1822 — meaning the 1819-dated host was already in circulation before any countermark authority existed.

The legitimacy and precise origin of many countermarks in this series remain contested among specialists. Forgeries and contemporary imitations are well-documented.
