In 1841, Cuba's colonial administration authorized a countermark program to validate — and redenominate — circulating Spanish silver at a time when the island was flooded with coins of uncertain provenance and weight. Spanish 2 Reales from the Madrid mint, identified by their assayer marks, were among the host coins selected for this treatment. The countermark effectively transformed a peninsular Spanish coin into an officially sanctioned Cuban colonial issue without new minting infrastructure.
The Madrid-struck KM#430.1 host is among the more commonly encountered bases for this type, though matching a legible countermark to a cleanly attributable host remains the core challenge for collectors.
