| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King Charles IV facing right, his hair tied at the nape with a ribbon bow, rendered in the portrait style standard to late Spanish colonial coinage. The effigy occupies the central field, with the mint date 1801 positioned in the lower exergue flanked by pellet stops. The encircling Latin legend reads CAROLUS IIII DEI GRATIA, distributed around the periphery, with the whole bounded by a finely milled border of raised beads. |

| Reverse description | The crowned Arms of Castile and León occupy the central field, displaying the quartered royal shield with castles and lions, surmounted by an imperial crown with cross finial. Flanking the shield are the Pillars of Hercules, each with a banner, representing the Strait of Gibraltar. The denomination mark 2R appears to the left of the shield, with the mint mark PTS (Potosí) and assayer's initial P to the upper left. The peripheral Latin legend HISPAN ET IND REX encircles the lower portion, with the date appearing on the obverse; the whole is bounded by a milled beaded border. |
