The shield is flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each pillar wound with a ribbon scroll, symbolizing the Strait of Gibraltar and the New World. The circular legend • HISPAN • ET IND • REX • runs around the upper periphery, while the mint mark G (or NG), denomination 2R, and assayer initial P appear distributed in the field.
