Obverse description Central quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and lions of León in alternating quarters, surmounted by a royal crown, all within a dotted inner border. Gothic letter 'm' mint marks appear to either side of the shield in the field. The surrounding legend is arranged within the outer border of the flan, partially visible due to the irregular hammered planchet and die shift typical of early Mexican colonial coinage.
