The Banco Entre-Riano was a provincial Argentine bank operating out of Entre Ríos province, and its 1872 issues occupy a peculiar corner of South American banking history. Entre Ríos had long functioned with considerable financial autonomy from Buenos Aires, and several provincial banks issued their own paper during this period before federal banking consolidation gradually ended the practice.
The denomination in reales bolivianos — rather than Argentine pesos — reflects how thoroughly Bolivian silver coinage had penetrated the river trade economy of the Mesopotamia region by the 1870s. The note's currency reference tells you more about the Paraná River commerce than any official monetary policy could.
