Jagapala ruled as a feudatory under the Kalachuris of Ratnapura, a branch of the Kalachuri dynasty that controlled the upper Mahanadi region in what is now Chhattisgarh. The rattis weight standard — derived from the seed of Abrus precatorius, used across the subcontinent as a jeweler's measure — places this coin firmly within a local mercantile economy operating well below the level of royal coinage, likely serving bazaar transactions in a regional market context the larger dynasty had little reason to regulate closely.
