Schwyz issued this billon rappen series during a particularly awkward transitional moment — the canton had just been absorbed into the Helvetic Republic, spat back out, and was now navigating the early Restoration period while the Swiss Confederation itself was being reconstituted under the Act of Mediation and then dismantled again by 1813. Cantonal coinage persisted through this chaos largely because federal monetary unification remained a political impossibility until the 1850s.
Billon at this fineness was barely distinguishable from copper in circulation wear, which is why survivors with any surface detail intact are genuinely scarce.
