The 2 Rand circulation series has rotated through South Africa's recognized cultural groups since the late 1990s, a project that expanded significantly after 2010 as the Mint worked through the country's eleven official language communities. The Zulu and Xhosa peoples — the two largest ethnolinguistic groups in South Africa by population — share this issue, a pairing that occasionally draws comment given the historically documented tensions between the two communities during the nineteenth century and again during the political violence of the early 1990s in KwaZulu-Natal.
