Obverse description The South African national coat of arms is depicted centrally in the field, featuring the secretary bird with outstretched wings, a shield with two human figures, crossed assegais and a knobkierie, and a wheat stalk surround, with the national motto in the exergue. Surrounding the emblem, the name of the country appears in all ten official languages arranged radially around the design. The date 2010 is divided either side of the central device, with the numeral '20' to the left and '10' to the right. The engraver's initials 'ALS' appear below the coat of arms in the lower field.

To the left foreground, a dockworker figure stands beside a large cargo net suspended from a crane boom, evoking the ship's role in maritime mail and cargo transport. The denomination 'R2' is inscribed in an ornate cursive script in the upper right field. The legend 'Mail Steamship' appears in italic script along the lower field, with 'WINDSOR CASTLE' inscribed below in smaller capitals. The engraver's initials 'LG' appear at the lower right.
