Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, this coin arrived at a particular inflection point for South Africa: the country had rejoined the UN in 1994 after a thirty-year absence, having been effectively expelled in 1974 over apartheid. The 1995 issue was thus South Africa's first participation in the wave of commemorative UN anniversary coins struck by member nations — a distinction that only makes sense knowing they had been locked out for three decades.
