The Xitsonga inscription "Afrika-Dzonga" — meaning "South Africa" in one of the country's eleven official languages — reflects the post-apartheid constitutional requirement to rotate indigenous language inscriptions across the coinage. South Africa's 1996 constitution mandated official recognition of Xitsonga alongside Zulu, Xhosa, Sepedi, and seven others, a linguistic policy with direct consequences for mint production schedules and die replacement cycles.
