Issued as part of South Africa's ongoing Constitutional Values series, this coin commemorates Section 15 of the 1996 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion, belief, and opinion — a clause that carried particular weight in a country where the apartheid state had instrumentalized Dutch Reformed theology to justify racial segregation for decades. The series itself was introduced to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Constitution.
