The 2 Rand denomination drew the Afrikaans obverse inscription for this series, pairing it with an English reverse, a rotation that had been in place since the mid-1990s currency redesign following the transition to democratic government.
Nickel-plated copper replaced the earlier nickel-brass composition during this period largely on cost grounds, as global nickel prices spiked sharply around 2007-2008.
