Saudi Arabia's shift to copper-nickel coinage in the late 1950s coincided with the kingdom's rapid monetization following oil revenue expansion under Saud bin Abdulaziz, whose reign was already financially strained by personal spending that would eventually force his removal from power in 1964. These pieces circulated during a period when the Saudi riyal itself was under pressure, with the International Monetary Fund intervening in 1958 to help stabilize the currency after foreign reserves collapsed.
