Obverse description Central field occupied by the toughra of Caliph Abdullah ibn Muhammad rendered in ornate Arabic calligraphy, accompanied by the inscription 'Umla jadida' (new currency) and the denomination below. The design is enclosed within a circular border composed of alternating crescents, lending the coin a distinctly Islamic decorative character. The calligraphic elements fill the field in the characteristic Mahdist style associated with the Omdurman mint.
