Egypt was technically an Ottoman province during this entire issue, but Britain's occupation following the 1882 Tel el-Kebir campaign meant Abdul Hamid II's name appeared on coins in a country his government no longer meaningfully controlled. The khedivate operated as a fiscal instrument of British debt management — the Caisse de la Dette Publique oversaw Egyptian revenues from 1876 onward, leaving the coinage as one of the few remaining symbols of Ottoman nominal suzerainty.
The series ran across multiple regnal years, each carrying the accession year of 1293 AH with a separate year counter. Collectors working this type chase the scarcer year combinations rather than the type itself.
