Burma's 1949 coinage was issued in the immediate aftermath of independence from Britain, granted in January 1948, and amid the near-collapse of the new state under simultaneous Communist and Karen insurgencies. The Union Bank of Burma assumed issuing authority as the country was, in practical terms, at war with itself across large portions of its own territory.
