| 裏面の説明 | A winged caduceus depicted centrally, with the staff surmounted by intertwined serpents and flanked by outstretched wings. To either side of the caduceus appear the regnal year notation (LΓ, year 3) and a monogram. The Greek legend ΗΡΩΔΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ (of King Herod) surrounds the central device, distributed across the field in the characteristic informal arrangement of Herodian bronzes. The overall die work is crude but legible, consistent with provincial hammered coinage of the late first century BC. |

Herod received his kingship from the Roman Senate in 40 BC — the very year this coin was struck — while Antigonus II Mattathias still physically controlled Jerusalem. Herod was king in name only, backed by Roman decree but not yet by territory. The coin precedes by three years his actual capture of the city with the help of Roman legions under Sosius.
