Hadrian's Wall was begun around 122 AD following the emperor's personal visit to Britain — one of the few times a sitting Roman emperor inspected the northern frontier directly. Construction took approximately six years and involved three legions. Guernsey, though never part of Roman Britain proper, has issued several pieces in this series commemorating Roman imperial history tied to the British Isles.
