Beschrijving keerzijde Saint George, depicted as a fully armoured knight on horseback, charges to the right atop a powerful rearing steed, his billowing cloak flowing behind him. The knight thrusts his broken lance downward into the body of a writhing dragon, which lies vanquished beneath the horse's hooves. This iconic design is executed in Benedetto Pistrucci's celebrated neoclassical style, with exceptional sculptural depth and dynamic movement throughout the composition. The initials B.P. appear discreetly in the lower right field, serving as Pistrucci's engraver's signature. The field is otherwise plain, allowing the dramatic scene to dominate the flan.

Aanvullende informatie

This is a pattern issue from the final year of George III's reign — he died in January 1820 after a decade of blind, deaf, and mentally incapacitated seclusion at Windsor. The coin was never adopted for circulation, partly because the transition to George IV brought an entirely fresh coinage program under William Wyon and Benedetto Pistrucci, rendering any late George III monetary planning moot almost immediately.

Spink 3784 places it firmly within the experimental two-pound denominations explored in the years surrounding the Great Recoinage of 1816.
