| Reverse description | Two fishermen are depicted in a traditional Maltese luzzu boat on a stylized sea, casting a net over the side; a rocky coastal fortification is visible on the horizon in the background. The FAO emblem, inscribed with the date 16 OCT, appears at the top center of the field. The curved legend WORLD . FOOD . DAY arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1981 at the left and the denomination Lm2 in the exergue at the base. |

Issued to mark the first anniversary of World Food Day, established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1980 to coincide with the FAO's own founding date of October 16, 1945. Malta's participation reflected the country's broader engagement with UN developmental initiatives during Dom Mintoff's administration — a period when Maltese foreign policy deliberately cultivated non-aligned credentials and multilateral visibility.
KM#52 was struck in limited numbers for collectors and saw essentially no circulation.
