The Isle of Man has long used its fiscal autonomy to issue commemorative coinage on subjects the Royal Mint would never touch, and this piece — honoring Esther Kee, a Manx suffragist — reflects that independence pointedly. The Isle of Man granted women the right to vote in 1881, making it the first territory in the world to do so under a representative government, decades before the mainland campaigns that history remembers more loudly.
Kee was among the local activists whose organizing helped sustain that early franchise. The series of which this forms a part was issued to mark the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act.
