The White Lion of Mortimer is the sixth release in the Queen's Beasts series, which the Royal Mint launched in 2016 to mark Elizabeth II's 90th birthday. The ten heraldic supporters were drawn from the figures that flanked her at the 1953 coronation. The Mortimer lion specifically traces to the arms of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March — the same Roger Mortimer who effectively ruled England as the lover of Isabella of France during Edward III's minority in the late 1320s, before Edward had him seized at Nottingham Castle and executed in 1330.
