Gibraltar's decision to issue Trafalgar commemoratives carried particular local weight — the battle was fought just 40 miles from the Rock, and Gibraltar itself served as the harbor where Nelson's body was returned to Britain preserved in a cask of brandy following his death on 21 October 1805.
