| Additional information |
The Mares of Diomedes — the eighth labour of Heracles — involved capturing the man-eating horses of the Thracian king Diomedes, who fed them on human flesh to keep them savage. Gibraltar has issued a long-running Hercules labours series, and this 2020 entry falls within that programme. The bimetallic format was adopted for the series in part to align with UK £2 coinage specifications, giving the pieces practical circulation compatibility with British currency — a deliberate consequence of Gibraltar's constitutional relationship with the Crown.
