| 裏面の説明 | The central field depicts a full-length figure of explorer Otto Nordenskjöld, clad in heavy polar clothing, standing to the left before an Antarctic icescape with the expedition ship Antarctic shown beset in pack ice to the right, its rigging rendered in fine detail. The inscription ANTARCTIC appears adjacent to the vessel in the field. The legend HEROIC AGE OF ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION arcs across the upper periphery, while SWEDISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION and the dates 1901-1903 are inscribed within the lower central field. The denomination TWO POUNDS appears along the lower rim. |

The Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901–1904, led by Otto Nordenskjöld, was the first to overwinter on the Antarctic continent — and nearly ended in catastrophe when the relief ship Antarctic was crushed by pack ice in 1903, stranding the crew for a second unplanned winter before an Argentine naval vessel secured their rescue. The Pobjoy Mint has issued a long-running series of Antarctic heritage coins for British Overseas Territories, this piece falling within that program.
