Additional information

The Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901–1904, led by Otto Nordenskjöld, was the first to overwinter on the Antarctic continent — and nearly ended in catastrophe when the relief ship Antarctic was crushed by pack ice in 1903, stranding the crew for a second unplanned winter before an Argentine naval vessel secured their rescue. The Pobjoy Mint has issued a long-running series of Antarctic heritage coins for British Overseas Territories, this piece falling within that program.
