The Isle of Man's 1996 silver proof two pound issues were produced during a period when the Manx government was aggressively expanding its commemorative coin program, largely targeting the collector market rather than circulation. The island's fiscal autonomy from the United Kingdom — it is a Crown dependency with its own lieutenant governor and independent treasury — allowed it to issue coinage far exceeding what a territory of 85,000 people could plausibly need for commerce.
Schön 1275a distinguishes this variant from associated bimetallic and base-metal strikes of the same year.
