Issued as part of the Royal Mint's four-coin Shakespeare series marking the 400th anniversary of his death, this piedfort pairs the standard commemorative reverse with double thickness — a format the Royal Mint has used since reviving the piedfort tradition in 1982, primarily as a premium collector vehicle. The comedy theme draws from a crowded field; Shakespeare wrote at least fourteen comedies, and the selection required curatorial decisions the Mint has never publicly detailed.
Spink K38 sits in a relatively short sequence. Collectors assembling the complete piedfort quartet face no particular rarity challenge — all four were produced in comparable limited numbers — but the series as a whole sold through quickly at issue.
