The Sea King served the RAF in search and rescue for over four decades before being retired in 2016, replaced by the AgustaWestland AW101. This coin appeared two years after that retirement — part of a broader Royal Mint program documenting British military aviation types that had reached the end of their service lives.
Piedfort strikes at the Royal Mint run to low mintages by design, double-thickness blanks requiring adjusted press parameters and separate production runs from standard issues.
