Alderney — the smallest of the inhabited Channel Islands — had only recently been granted the right to issue its own coinage when this piece was struck, making the 1990 Queen Mother commemorative one of the earliest coins issued under that authority. The island's coinage program was administered through the Royal Mint, which struck this proof in 22-carat gold to a relatively generous specification for a commemorative of the period.
The Queen Mother turned 90 on August 4, 1990. Mintage for the gold proof was tightly controlled.
