Issued to mark the Queen Mother's centenary in 2000, this piece belongs to a wave of commemorative bimetallic crown-sized coins produced by the Pobjoy Mint for British overseas territories during the late 1990s and early 2000s — the Falkland Islands among the most prolific issuers. The gold-plated outer ring on a sterling silver centre is a format Pobjoy used extensively for prestige commemoratives of this period, offering visual impact at a fraction of the cost of solid bimetallic production.
