The Platinum Jubilee marked 70 years of Elizabeth II's reign — the longest of any British monarch and, by June 2022, already shadowed by her declining health. She died in September of that year, making this among the final commemorative issues struck in her honor before her death rather than after it. The Royal Mint had been producing jubilee coinage since the Silver Jubilee of 1977, but no previous issue carried that particular weight of finality.
