| Reverse description | The copper-nickel centre of the reverse depicts a three-quarter length portrait of Sir Ernest Shackleton in polar attire, holding a walking stick, set against a stylised Antarctic landscape featuring a prominent mountain peak and, in the middle distance, a group of three explorers trudging across the terrain. The nickel brass ring carries the legend ERNEST SHACKLETON • around the upper arc and • 100 YEARS OF POLAR EXPLORATION along the lower arc, all in raised Latin capitals. The design is attributed to engraver David Young and commemorates the centenary of Shackleton's final Antarctic expedition. |
