| Reverse description | A colourised Green Heron (Butorides virescens) stands in profile facing left, occupying the central field of the coin and rendered in naturalistic polychrome colour print with green, brown, and ochre tones. The legend NELSONS ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery in raised lettering. The territorial abbreviation BIOT appears in small lettering above the denomination £2, which is inscribed in the lower field. The dark mirror-polished background provides strong contrast to the colourised bird motif. |

| Additional information |
The British Indian Ocean Territory has no permanent civilian population — the Chagossians were forcibly removed between 1968 and 1973 to make way for the joint US-UK military base at Diego Garcia. Coins issued under the BIOT designation are therefore never circulated in any conventional sense; they are struck solely for the collector market, with the territory itself functioning as a legal fiction for numismatic purposes.
Nelson's Islands is one of the outer atolls of the Chagos Archipelago, lying well north of Diego Garcia and off-limits to any non-military access.
