The Isle of Man has long used its £2 coinage as a vehicle for niche commemorative subjects, a practice enabled by the island's fiscal autonomy from the United Kingdom — it issues its own currency under the authority of the Manx Treasury rather than the Royal Mint. The TT Races, held on the island's public roads since 1907, are the obvious historical hook here: no other motorsport event in the world still runs on completely unmodified public roads at speeds exceeding 200 mph.
