The 2001 Marconi two-pound commemorates the centenary of his first transatlantic wireless transmission, sent from Poldhu in Cornwall to Signal Hill, Newfoundland in December 1901. The signal — three dots for the letter S in Morse code — crossed 2,100 miles, a distance the scientific establishment had largely declared impossible given the assumed straight-line propagation of radio waves.
Struck in sterling silver as a proof issue alongside the base-metal circulation version, mintage was tightly controlled through Royal Mint subscription.
