Issued to mark the 40th anniversary of the liberation of the Channel Islands from German occupation on 9 May 1945, this Guernsey piece commemorates one of the more uncomfortable episodes in British constitutional history. The islands — Crown dependencies, not part of the United Kingdom — were the only British soil occupied by Nazi Germany during the war, a fact that generated considerable postwar sensitivity in London regarding the conduct of both the occupying forces and some among the local administration.
The .925 silver version, KM#47a, was struck alongside a cupro-nickel circulation issue, a split increasingly common in Guernsey commemorative policy by the mid-1980s.
