The Pobjoy Mint has operated as the official minting authority for several British Overseas Territories since the 1970s, producing coinage for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands — one of the most remote and rarely visited jurisdictions on earth. The King Penguin colonizes South Georgia in extraordinary numbers, with the island hosting one of the largest such colonies anywhere, a population that collapsed under sealing and whaling pressure in the nineteenth century before recovering after those industries died out.
