The Griffin of Edward III is the tenth release in the Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts series, drawn from the heraldic supporters that flanked the Queen's coronation throne in 1953. Edward III adopted the gold griffin as a personal badge in the fourteenth century, distinct from the royal arms proper — its appearance here references that private heraldic tradition rather than any official dynastic symbol. The series as a whole concluded in 2021, making this one of the final issues before the program closed.
